The Brand
Guerlain is the Parisian alchemist who has been pursuing the infinite search for the wonders of the senses and turning beauty into art since 1828. Maison de Haute Parfumerie and Haute Cosmetique, it has elevated the art of personalization as the source of its exceptionality.
Since 1828, the history of Maison Guerlain has been marked by great creations that have left their mark and transcended the ages thanks to their contemporary and innovative spirit. To this day, some of them remain references of contemporary beauty.
Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain made the opening of his first boutique on Rue Rivoli in Paris in 1828 his founding act. Soon, it became a place of elegant meetings, Parisian high society or the English rich come to buy creams, shadows and perfumes.
Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain dedicated the fragrance Eau de Cologne Impériale to the Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, which earned him the title of “Official perfumer to Her Majesty”. He entrusted the glassmakers Pochet du Courval with the manufacture of a flask decorated with the Empire’s bees, painted in fine gold and with a scalloped motif, inspired by the Place Vendôme column. Thus was born the Flask of Bees.
Aimé Guerlain creates the revolutionary “Ne m’Oubliez Pas”, the first red lipstick stick presented in a refillable case. It is equipped with an innovative push-button mechanism, inspired by chandeliers. A new gesture that has become part of beauty habits around the world.
While Eiffel was building his tower, Aimé Guerlain was creating the audacious Jicky. Jicky, the first perfume to combine synthetic and natural notes, is a revolutionary fougère accord that opens the way to a new abstract perfumery with marked trails. Moreover, Jicky anticipates a history of gender fluidity. His unique signature puzzled the female public, but was well received by men? And today by everyone.
Jacques Guerlain created L’Heure Bleue for his wife Lili. A bouquet of roses softened by lilies, violets and vanilla, evoking the moment when “the night has not yet found its star”, the one that inspired the Impressionists whose works he collected. Its inverted heart-shaped bottle is topped by a heart-shaped stopper, a technical feat of Baccarat glassworks.
At 68 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, the Guerlain family built their private hotel in 1914, a magnificent building registered in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. This boutique marks the beginning of the Maison’s expansion, from Paris to every corner of the planet today.
Created by Jacques Guerlain, this perfume is a reflection of that time, when Europe was fascinated by the land of the rising sun. Mitsouko is a chypre whose name means mystery… Jean-Paul Guerlain stated that it “possesses the dreamy scent of a woman’s skin”.
Jacques Guerlain’s greatest success. “Temple of love” in Sanskrit, it pays homage to the love story of Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, protected by the gardens of Shalimar. Between bergamot and vanilla, it revolutionizes olfactory codes and founds the family of amber perfumes. Its bottle, a technical feat designed by Raymond Guerlain, is the first bottle with a base and represents a pile typical of Mongolian gardens.
The Guerlain beauty institute opens on the second floor of 68 Avenue des Champs-Élysées. One of the first in the world, it conceives treatment in an avant-garde way. It offers the first fruits of the ultimate science of well-being: the pleasure of the senses, associated with a technique and a cutting-edge art of gesture for maximum long-term effectiveness.
The Frank-Giacometti-Bérard trio marks the aesthetics of this exceptional place.
SERUM
In 1950, Guerlain created a genuine treatment innovation in the form of the first serum with an overdose of active ingredients: Émulsion d’Ambroisie, a pioneer of its kind. A new, light and fluid texture, simply divine, marketed for nearly 50 years, until 1997.
1965, HABIT ROUGE
In love with women, to whom he dedicates his most beautiful creations, Jean-Paul Guerlain is also committed to offering the Guerlain language to men. Habit Rouge was created in 1965: the first amber perfume for men, inspired by the equestrian world so dear to the Guerlains.
1984, TERRACOTTA, THE BRONZING POWDERS
In 1984, Guerlain invented its legendary Terracotta powders, inspired by a trip to the heart of the desert. Throughout the year, they provide an instant good-face effect and a tailor-made tan. A simplicity that goes against the grain of 1980s trends. Terracotta powders remain one of the Maison’s greatest beauty secrets, passed down from mother to daughter for almost forty years.
1987, MÉTÉORITES POWDERS
“Refinement by Guerlain” according to advertising in the 1990s. These loose powders with revolutionary control are presented in a case inspired by Catherine de Medici’s compact. Colored pearls and a sweet violet scent, to correct, illuminate and brighten the complexion. Behind the scenes, the Maison’s exclusive know-how, passed on from artisan to artisan through extensive and meticulous training.
1994, GUERLAIN FOUNDS “COSMETIC VALLEY”.
The Maison shares a long history with the French Cosmetic Valley. Founded by Jean-Paul Guerlain, it now houses his two industrial facilities. References of Haute Parfumerie and haute cosmetics, know-how and innovation, these facilities are pioneers in responsible industrial strategy.
1995, ALPHABELLA
Alphabella is the Maison’s first treatment in a double-tank bottle, “the first freshly pressed and blended renewing cocktail for its treatments”. It combines AHA (alpha hydro-acids) and hydro-soothing cream intended to soothe the uncomfortable sensation of acids.
2006, THE WONDERS OF THE ORCHID
In 2006, Orchidée Impériale, an exceptional complete treatment, was unveiled worldwide. Thanks to its interest in the orchid, recognized for the longevity of its flowering and its tenacity, Guerlain Research reveals its secrets in a cosmetic treatment. It took seven years to demonstrate that the combination of molecules from four orchids has exceptional anti-aging properties for the skin.
